The Grampians Peaks Trail will be a world class, long distance walking experience, showcasing the beauty and majesty of the Grampian’s natural and cultural landscapes. Grampians Tourism has been a key player with local and state government agencies to successfully fund this project.
A master plan for the 144 km long-distance walking trail was released in May 2015. Situated in the Grampians National Park, it will extend from Mt Zero in the north through to the township of Dunkeld in the south. The master plan was overseen by the Grampians Peaks Trail Task Force, a group chaired by Grampians Tourism and comprising representatives from local shires, tourism bodies, walking clubs and state government agencies including Regional Development Victoria, Tourism Victoria and Parks Victoria.
The first stage of the trail was launched in May 2015 and includes a 36 kilometre one-way three day/two night loop walk from Halls Gap to Borough Huts and returning to Halls Gap. Planning for the remainder of the Grampians Peaks Trail including the track, campsites and supporting infrastructure has already commenced. These works will be undertaken via a $20.2 million Victorian Government grant from the Regional Infrastructure Development Fund and a $10 million Federal Government grant through the National Stronger Regions Fund.
The Grampians Peaks Trail is recognised by the Victorian Government as a priority product development opportunity for the region and is one of four long-distance walks being developed under the Walk Victoria’s Icons brand which will position Victoria and the Grampians as a key nature-based tourism destination.
